Skin Testing Before Having Your Hair Coloured

WHY IS SKIN TESTING BEFORE HAIR COLOUR IMPORTANT??

colourstart-pack-320x230At Salon-M hairdressers in Wallasey, we have a skin testing procedure in place that not only protects us as a business but most importantly it protects you – our client, from rare adverse reactions.

Skin complaints from hair dye are relatively rare but at Salon-M we have a duty of care to make sure that you are protected ahead of any hair dyeing procedure.

SKIN TESTING AT SALON-M, WALLASEY

We know it’s a pain and believe us, we hate turning away business for walk-in appointments, but the BEST way to cover yourself is by actually coming into the salon and having a specific skin test done with the colour range that we use at SALON-M. This is by far the SAFEST way to have your skin test done. We do however realise that it is difficult to get to the salon sometimes – therefore we do run a HOME TESTING SERVICE where one of our staff will call to your home at a convenient time and do your skin test which literally takes minutes – at your door.

SKIN TESTING IF YOU ARE OUTSIDE OF THE WALLASEY AREA.

If you live outside the Wallasey area and CANNOT get to the salon for a skin test then we will provide you with a COLOURSTART HOME SKIN TEST to use 48 hrs before your visit. Every time you come in for your colour we will provide you with one of these tests to keep in your purse/wallet for your next visit. We can even post these HOME TESTS out to you. We will give you full instructions on how to use these and there are instructions in the packet. For further help watch this video –

PLEASE NOTE: The safest method of having a skin test done is to actually visit the salon to have a SPECIFIC SALON-M, SKIN TEST.

SKIN TESTING – DISCLAIMERS.

As a last resort – SALON-M will get you to sign a disclaimer saying you waive any responsibility for any reactions from SALON-M. This is not ideal and will only be used when clients are adamant that they don’t want a skin test done (which, so far, nobody has done) or have incorrectly applied a colourstart skin test at home.

PLEASE NOTE: Disclaimers cannot be used on a regular basis because THEY WILL NOT PROTECT YOU OR SALON-M if used as normal practice. We endeavour as professionals to KEEP YOU SAFE at all times and BEST PRACTICE is for you to come into the salon and have a SPECIFIC SKIN TEST undertaken.

SKIN TESTING IS TO PROTECT YOU.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS.

Q: Why is hypersensitivity to hair dye only becoming an issue now?
A: There has been a dramatic increase in hypersensitivity in recent years – increased incidence, increased severity and increased complexity. Within the hairdressing industry, this is compounded with an increasing trend towards the use of darker hair colours.

Q: I’ve been colouring my hair for many years and have never had a reaction to hair dye. Why should I start testing now?
A: Every day, we witness how you can become hypersensitive to new things. Some people develop hay fever one year or find they become allergic to latex gloves. The same is true for hair dye. You can become sensitive at any time in your life.

Q: I’m taking medication. Will this affect the result?
A: Medication may vary your reaction to hair dyes. Some will make you hypersensitive; others may suppress your existing hypersensitivity.

Q: Why do I need to test at least 48 hours before the application of a hair dye?
A: In certain circumstances, the most severe form of hypersensitivity is a cell-mediated reaction that takes at least 48 hours to occur.

Skin Testing For Scalp Application of Bleach.

*PLEASE NOTE – THERE IS *NO SKIN TEST* THAT WE CAN DO FOR SENSITIVITY TO BLEACH*

Every person has a different tolerance or sensitivity to Scalp Bleaching. Factors such as skin type (oily/dry etc), ambient room temperature and skin temperature on different parts of the scalp are all factors on how bleach works.

It is normal to feel an Itching or tingling feeling – even a mild burning sensation when the bleach is first applied.

Try not to wash your hair on the day of application as this seems to help and if you do feel any major increase in levels of discomfort due to the Bleaching Process please inform your stylist IMMEDIATELY.

If you don’t inform your stylist of this BURNING increasing to an uncomfortable level – this can result in a CHEMICAL BURN to your scalp.
